SO, I had a post all written up talking about Mother's Day and Jenna's dedication but then I read it and realized I somehow made everything including myself sound a little better than it really was. I tend to do that I have to confess, and the Lord is really cranking down on me on the subject of pride. Humble yourself Danaly! So, here's the scoop, minus the fluff.
Sunday was good. I woke up to steel oats in the crockpot and freshly brewed coffee (he planned ahead this year). There were cards, flowers and a lovely lovely gift. Lucy had even been taught how to say "Happy Mother's Day Mommy!" and that made my month! Things were going well until we realized we had to be at church by 10:30am instead of our usual 10:45am.
You people with kids know every minute counts when it comes to getting a family fed, cleaned up, dressed and out the door on time. In the midst of the usual running around, someone (me) got upset 'cause someone else (him) was taking too long getting ready hence cutting into my getting ready time. I tell ya, whoever said Satan works harder on Sundays was right. I can't remember the last Sunday we arrived at church without having had bickering of some sort. Long story short, we made it on time. The ceremony was at the beginning of service not to make the little ones wait. There were 5 other children being dedicated with Jenna. Each family was called to the front one at a time. Our turn came and Lucy decided to scream her way down the aisle and into the altar (hopefully not prophetic of what she'll do on her wedding day). Everyone laughed but we weren't laughing. Not fun when you are the parents of the screaming child. Pastor Larry talked a bit about what it meant to dedicate the children then he prayed over us and that was that.
All in all it was a sweet ceremony but since I had been through a dedication at our former church and the speaker was none less than our dear friend Kim who brought us to tears with the most awesome, heartfelt personal prayer for Lucy... I was disappointed.
It was taking everything in me to get over the whole thing not having been "special" enough and focus on the hugeness of the commitment we had just made in front of a few hundred people, a promise to God to raise the gift He gave us to know and love Him. Then something happened as we were walking out. Pastor Larry gave us a letter for Jenna in a sealed envelope that we are to keep and give to her the day she gives her life to Christ. Oh my goodness, talk about killing me softly! The message sank in quick and made the rest of my day heavy with the realization of the huge task we've been trusted with.
Nothing better than BBQ brisket, coleslaw and baked corn to cure a heavy heart so we headed over to Going's BBQ and didn't leave until it was hard to walk. Got home and napped. And that was it. That's the true story of our Sunday.
No pictures, sorry, camera still broken and haven't gone to get a new one. We do have the whole thing on video but I'm not posting it 'cause I wasn't having a particularly good hair day (not enough time to get ready, remember?) and vanity is something I still have not conquered. How's that for honesty?
